The 8th November 1962 is a day which still lives in the memory of many local people because of the Barony Colliery collapse which saw the deaths of four local men. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the disaster, the Barony A Frame Trust is holding a memorial event on Sunday 4th November.
The inter-denominational service will be conducted by Father Stephen McGratton of Our Lady of Lourdes & St. Patrick Church and Rev. Steve Clipston from Auchinleck Parish Church.
Barney Menzies, Chair of the Barony A Frame Trust commented ‘This is a community event which is available for everyone to attend. We hope that local people who remember the Barony disaster will come along to pay their respects to those who died there. It is also an opportunity to pay homage to everyone who has died, or been injured in mining in the UK and across the world, in recent times.’
The commemoration will be a two part service; a wreath laying ceremony will be held at 1.15pm beneath the A Frame on the former Barony Colliery site. Following this, at 2pm will be a memorial service at the Barony Parish Church, Church Hill Auchinleck. Taking part in the service will be Cumnock Academy Brass band, representatives from the Trust and the National President of the NUM Nicky Wilson.
‘Everyone is invited to join us for a cup of tea after the services.’ Barney added ‘I’m sure there will be many people, former colliery workers who haven’t seen each other for years and this will be an opportunity to catch up with each other.’
